Hurricane Lili

Lili regenerated on the evening of September 26th near Jamaica and continuously slapped in enhancing a more west- northwesterly course a. On September 30, Lili became a hurricane that was just passed as the system via the Cayman Islands. The storm strengthened further, crossed the Isla de la Juventud, and moved as a Category 2 hurricane on the West of Cuba in Pinar del Río. Lili reached during the day on the waters of the Gulf of Mexico, without having lost in the passage about the country much of its strength.

The system turns to the northwest and accelerated. It was on October 2, to a major hurricane, about 590 km south- southeast of New Orleans. The intensification continued support continues through the warm water surface in the Gulf of Mexico and the well-organized discharge. Lili reached the greatest intensity in the afternoon of October 2 with sustained wind speeds of 235 km / h hurricane of category 4

The damage to buildings and other structures were comprehensive. The effects were in the provinces of Pinar del Rio and La Habana most clearly. A total of 48,000 houses were damaged, 16,000 of them lost their roofs. Less severely affected Sancti Spiritus was where only 945 houses were damaged. The provinces in the east of the island, including Guantanamo showed a similar damage pattern. In parts of the western provinces it took weeks until power was working again. One consequence of this was that pumps for pumping of ground water were out and had to be supplied with drinking water from outside individual localities. The cultivation of tobacco and rice was severely damaged, but the exact damage by Lili was difficult to determine because Isidore had hit the region just a week earlier.
