Hverfjall
View into the crater of Hverfjall
The tuff ring Hverfjall (also Hverfell ) is part of the volcanic system of the Krafla in northern Iceland in the Mývatn.
Other craters of this type
On Earth, only few craters exist of this type. The somewhat smaller Ludent is located about 4 km southeast of the Hverfjall. Other examples include Diamond Head and Koko Head in Hawaii or the number of copies in the Fort Rock Basin, Oregon, USA.
Trails on the Hverfjall
The ring wall of Hverfjall can be mounted on two marked trails. These must not be left so as not to destroy this delicate geological tuff formation.
