Geography

The municipality is situated on the Great Rye Island ( Žitný ostrov ), a part of the Slovak Danube lowlands on the road between Šamorín and Zlaté Klasy, 26 kilometers from Bratislava and 27 km from Dunajská Streda.

Hviezdoslavov as an independent municipality unit was not until 1936, after the merger of the courts Vörösmajor, Jozemajor and Németsók, on the most part to the families Palffy (previously also Apponyis ) and Rudolf Wiener- worlds belonging to the country. Even after the first land reform in Czechoslovakia in the early 1920 Slovak and Czech settlers here were invited to a colony in the almost exclusively Hungarian-speaking Great Rye Island, at that time divided between the municipalities Štvrtok na Ostrove and Mierovo to start. Here, among other things, the first Slovak -language school of the Great Rye Island was founded. While membership of Hungary in the years 1938-45 (see First Vienna Award ) was Hviezdoslavov part of Štvrtok na Ostrove (then called Csütörtök ).
