Hyam Maccoby

Hyam Maccoby ( born March 20, 1924 in Sunderland; † 2 May 2004) was a British Judaic scholar and writer.

Maccoby worked until his death as professor at the Centre for Jewish Studies at the University of Leeds. Maccoby dealt in his writings again and again with the story of the historical Jesus, which he embeds strongly in the troubled and marked by uprisings political context of the history of Judea under the Syrian legate. He also wrote about the phenomenon of ancient and modern anti-Semitism, its cause he looks in the representations of Judas Iscariot in the Gospels. The Talmudic tradition and Jewish religious history are subjects of his works.
