Hyles costata

Hyles costata is a butterfly (moth ) from the family of moth ( Sphingidae ).

Features

The moths have a wingspan of 70-82 millimeters. You have the color typical of the genus Hyles. You see Hyles exilis very similar, differ from this type but slightly in coloration and in the males in the structure of the genitalia. On the sides of the first segment of the front legs H. costa has up to nine spikes, whereas H. exilis up to 12 transfers. The caterpillars are very different, which is why the species status is warranted for both forms.

The eggs and pupae are unknown.

Occurrence and distribution

Hyles costa is widespread in Mongolia and in the adjacent regions of Russia, where it occurs together with Hyles exilis. Some little evidence there is to the east and south in China. Probably the style but in northern China more widespread and also occurs in Xinjiang, Gansu, Shaanxi and the North in Inner Mongolia.

In Russia it has been demonstrated in Khakassia, Tuva, Buryatia, Daurien, the Trans-Baikal region, the Amur Oblast and Jewish Autonomous Oblast. In Mongolia it is in Khentii Aimag, Uvs aimag, Bajanchongor aimag, Bulgan aimag, in Khan Uul, Selenge Aimag in, Dornod Aimag, Gobi - Altai aimag, Khovd Aimag, Ömnö Gobi Aimag and detected in Töw Aimag. Evidence from China, there are from Heilongjiang and Shandong.

The species colonized dry grasslands, steppe areas and forest edges. In Transbaikalia they are found preferentially in steppe areas of extensive river valleys.

Way of life

The moths fly in China in July and in Mongolia and Russia, according to spread area between June and August. The caterpillars are different from Hyles exilis only mountain Knöterichen ( Aconogonon ) Vogelknöterichen ( Polygonum ) and Rumex ( Rumex ) detected. Parasitoids of the caterpillars are unknown.
