Botanical history

Nathaniel Lord Britton and Joseph Nelson Rose described in her book, The Cactaceae subtribe the three Rhipsalidanae ( 8 genera ), Epipyhlanae ( 9 genera ) and Hylocereanae ( 9 genera ) containing all epiphytic and air root bildene species. Curt Backeberg summed up this 1942 Tribus Hylocereeae under subfamily Cereoideae K.Schum. together and divided them into 3 subtribe with 31 of his species.

Today's classification as a tribe of Cactaceae was made in 1958 by Franz Buxbaum.
