Hypercharge
In particle physics, the hypercharge (symbol, to distinguish it from the weak hypercharge ) a quantum number. It is used to describe particles of the strong interaction are ( quarks and hadrons composed of them ).
The hypercharge is:
- For up-and down - quark, respectively:
- For anti -up and anti -down quark respectively:
- For the nucleons ( proton p, neutron n ), respectively.
The hypercharge of a particle is related to its electric charge ( in units of the elementary charge ) and the z- component of its isospin together on the Gell-Mann - Nishijima relation:
In addition:,
Where B is the baryon number, S for strangeness, C for the Charm, B ' for bottom Ness and T is the Topness.
When viewing an isospin multiplets of baryons and mesons applies:
Where Q denotes the average electric charge of the particles of the multiplet.
