Hyperglycemia

Hyperglycemia ( AltGr. Ὑπέρ ( hyper) "over", γλυκύς ( glykys ) " sweet" and αἷμα ( haima ) " blood ") is a medical term, with an elevated blood sugar level is called. There are various causes such as diabetes mellitus or the harmless postprandial hyperglycemia after a carbohydrate-rich meal (physiological hyperglycemia). Typical symptoms are in severe cases, increased urination ( polyuria), severe thirst and dry mouth and dry skin, but also nausea, vomiting, dehydration ( dehydration ) and faintness, dizziness (vertigo), confusion, visual disturbances up to the hyperglycemic coma. The treatment consists in the reduction of elevated blood sugar levels and if necessary accompanying measures such as the stabilization of potassium levels in the blood.
