Hypermedia

As hypermedia or hypertext mediumship is called a variant of hypertext with explicit emphasis on the multimedia aspect. A multimedia program is not automatically a hypermedia system. The portmanteau word hypermedia consists of the words " hypertext " and " Multimedia".

Background

Both hypertext and hypermedia is based on a combination of nodes ( engl. nodes ); these nodes may contain different media. While the hypertext refers only to the exchange between book text, footnotes and glossary are in hypermedia systems texts (in the narrow sense of the word as a sequence of sentences ) with data in a database, graphics ( static images ), video (moving pictures ) and sound ( sound, voice and music -related events). A non- linear combination is provided. Hypermedia allows a special form of knowledge production and representation. It can be understood as part of field of e -learning.

Most authors use the terms hypertext and hypermedia interchangeably ( as Jakob Nielsen in 1995 and Rainer Kuhlen 1997). Also the advanced understanding of " text " from the semiotics suggests the legitimacy of this equation. Only a few authors such as Schnupp insist on a clear separation of hypertext and hypermedia texts for multimedia.

Currently the largest existing hypermedia is the World Wide Web.

Problems of multimedia hypertext

A central problem of multimedia hypertext results from the integration of asynchronous by the time dimension ( / animation / video and film sound / voice / music ) and dynamic ( ie at the time of creating the hypertext is not exactly known ) elements.

Plain text can be used for example as a named starting point for triggering the screening of a video film; However, this solution is often considered as hypermedia little and insufficient. An alternative approach was developed at the MIT Media Lab for the Elastic Charles- project; there is a small, moving image ( micon [ moving icon], Engl. for " moving Ikonogramm " ) as a starting point for a hypermedia link.

Another problem of synchronous hypermedia elements with time dimension is addressing a specific time point of the element ( possible by Anchor links ) or the attachment of a link within a moving image or sound sequence. Conceivable are then purely tonbasierte hypertext systems.

Areas of application of hypermedia systems

Hypermedia concepts allow for a variety of applications.

  • Technical documentation in the form of manuals
  • Tools for the collection and representation of knowledge
  • Teaching / learning materials
  • Informations-/Auskunftssystem
  • CSCW Computer Supported Cooperative Work
  • Computer -aided design and computer -aided engineering
