Hypoiodous acid are referred to as the oxo acid of iodine oxidation state 1. It has the molecular formula HIO, its salts are called Hypoiodite. Hypoiodous acid is momentarily stable only in solution and can not be obtained in pure form.
Representation
The presentation of the Hypoiodigen acid is analogous of hypochlorous acid and hypobromous acid by reaction of molecular iodine with water.
To shift the reaction equilibrium to the right, the reaction in the presence of mercury (II ) oxide is carried out with mercury ( II) iodide as an adduct with mercury (II ) oxide is precipitated from the solution.
Properties
Hypoiodous acid is a volatile acid, which tends to be the two-stage disproportionation to iodine and iodic acid.
The hypoiodous acid is the weakest hypohalous acid ( pKa = 10.64 ). It can be both oxidizing and reducing agent.
Use
Probably hypoiodous acid, the active species of the terms used in medicine for disinfecting iodine solution Iodwasser.
