Insoluble in hot, cold water soluble ( gel ); high degree of substitution with hydroxypropyl partially soluble in the water-miscible organic solvents.

Hydroxypropyl methylcellulose (HPMC ) is a mixture of various alkyl-substituted celluloses partially. It comes in various degrees of polymerization and different degrees of substitution on the market ( Erstpatent 1960).

Use

  • Construction industry: a rheological additive
  • Food Industry: thickeners, viscosity-controlling substances. They are approved in the EU as a food additive number E464.
  • Pharmacy: humectants, thickeners, emulsion stabilizer, film-forming agents
  • Cosmetics: Through its thickening and stabilizing properties as well as their skin compatibility HPMC is used in emulsions, toothpastes, shampoos, soaps, creams and lotions.
  • Tobacco: HPMC is used as a binder and film former in the manufacture of tobacco leaves and flakes as well as an adhesive for cigarette paper.

Features: Aqueous HPMC gels tend to be very fast to increase their viscosity when heated at a certain temperature. This temperature is often referred to as the gel point, but this is not entirely correct in this case. This hardening process is reversible, that is, once the temperature has fallen sufficiently and the gel is liquid again. Production

Cellulose is reacted with propylene oxide and high methyl chloride pressure in hot sodium hydroxide solution.
