Hypsometric curve
The hypsometric curve shows the height distribution of a planet or more generally a geographical area. This is plotted on the ordinate ( vertical axis), the height and the abscissa (horizontal axis) represents the amount of elevation of the total area in percent.
Examples
Earth
The hypsometric curve of the earth has two peaks: one at the level of the continental plates, one at the level of the ocean floor. This fine division is therefore a clear indication of the existence of water in the form of large oceans.
Venus
The Venus has only a sharp peak at the height of the surface of Venus. This is a clear indication that there has never been water on Venus in the form of large oceans.
