Hypsopygia glaucinalis

Hypsopypia glaucinalis

Hypsopygia glaucinalis is a (small) butterfly from the family of European corn borer ( Pyralidae ) and is expected to whose family Pyralinae.

Features

The wingspan of the butterfly is 20 to 32 mm (23 to 30 millimeters and a front wing length 11-13 mm). The forewings of Hypsopygia glaucinalis are dark brown with two bright, thin transverse lines. These are slightly thickened at the anterior margin. The outer transverse line is also centered slightly bent. The hind wings are much lighter, but also have two white transverse lines, but the follow closer to each other. The antennae of the males are short and ciliated, the sensor of the females easy and thready.

The caterpillar is blackish with a rust yellow head and neck shield (or black head ).

Geographical distribution and habitat

The range of the species extends over most of Europe, North Africa, Asia Minor, northern Iran to the Russian Far East, Sakhalin, Kuril Islands, northern China, the Korean Peninsula and Japan. In northern China, the nature rises to 2250 m above sea level.

The species occurs in forest and bush landscapes, but also synanthropic in Heuställen and thatched buildings.

Hypsopygia glaucinalis forms in Central Europe a generation a year; the moths fly from June until September. In warmer areas multiple generations are formed. The moths are crepuscular and nocturnal and come to artificial light sources. Occasionally they fly during the day, usually they rest hidden in barns, gazebos, thatched huts and dry leaves. They often sit there with outstretched wings and hochgebogenem abdomen. The caterpillars are found from September. They live socially in a tubular web and hibernate it also. They feed on dead plant material such as hay, fallen leaves, and are also found in birds' nests. Pupation takes place in a bright cocoon in food material.

Taxonomy

The taxon was described in 1758 by Carolus Linnaeus as Phalaena ( Pyralis ) glaucinalis first time scientifically. With " Pyralis " nitidalis Fabricius, 1794 and Pyralis Yokohamae Butler, 1879, there are two more synonyms. For a long time the species was uncertain affiliation; Therefore, the type appears in the literature in the combinations Herculia glaucinalis, Ocrasa glaucinalis, Orthopypia glaucinalis and since 2006 now under Hypsopygia glaucinalis.
