Hyrcania

Hyrcania is an ancient landscape on the southern Caspian Sea, in present-day Iran and Turkmenistan.

History

Under Darius III. Phrataphernes was (Greek: Φραταφερνης ) satrap of Parthia and Hyrcania. He submitted to Alexander after the death of Darius, and was confirmed by him as satrap. Even after Alexander's death in 323 BC he remained satrap.

Wildlife

In ancient times Hyrcania was famous for its tigers, but these are extinct since approximately 1970. So Dido accuses Aeneas, who has left:
