With the previous studio album Pyromania in 1983 the band was the commercial breakthrough. For tax reasons, the musicians decided to relocate to Ireland. When the work should begin to follow up album, Wish producer Mutt Lange was fully booked, and the other candidate Jim Steinman was not available. The band decided to produce the album himself, and began in the spring of 1984, at Wisseloord studios in Hilversum, the Netherlands with the recordings. The tracks on the album co-wrote the band. After Mutt Lange was again available, the scheduled recordings were stopped on 31 December 1984 in a car accident by drummer Rick Allen, in which he lost his left arm. With the help of NASA drums was developed specifically for Allen, in which he was able to use the most important functions with their feet. However, the recordings could be finished until 1986 because singer Joe Elliott was meantime suffering from mumps.

After the mix in the spring of 1987, the album was released in August 1987. The band, whose popularity had declined, because since their last album about four years had passed, began a tour with a total of 227 shows to promote the album. It was permanently airplay for the music channel MTV. Joe Elliott described the album as the most over -produced album of the band and expressed surprise by the success of Hysteria.
