I Shot the Sheriff

I Shot the Sheriff (in German about "I shot the sheriff " ) is a song by Jamaican reggae musician Bob Marley and his band The Wailers, released in 1973 on the album Burnin '. I Shot the Sheriff was the last single, which published Marley along with Peter Tosh and Bunny Wailer before it leaked out of the band to pursue their own solo careers.

The title of the song was supposed to I Shot the Police noisy, but the band was afraid to get into trouble with the government. So we chose instead the more harmless I Shot the Sheriff.

The key of the studio version is in G minor. It takes a little more than four and a half minutes. At concerts, the song in F sharp minor was played so well on the recording of the live album Live! (1975). I Shot the Sheriff was played by Marley on September 20, 1980 for the last time at Madison Square Garden in New York City.

A cover version of the blues musician Eric Clapton 1974 reached number one on the U.S. charts, which also Marley brought a surge in popularity. Other well-known cover versions are available from Warren G, Screamin 'Jay Hawkins, UB40 and Zero Time - guitarist Malcolm McDonald.

The music magazine Rolling Stone listed the song in November 2004 in its list of the 500 best songs of all time at number 443
