The I SS Panzer Corps, also I. SS Panzer Corps " Leibstandarte " was a major unit of the Waffen- SS during World War II.

History

The General Command of I. SS Panzer Corps was set up on 27 July 1943 in Berlin light field. This was associated with the renaming of the former SS Panzer Corps in II SS Panzer Corps. To the Commanding General of the SS -group leader Colonel Josef Dietrich was appointed. The preparation of the corps troops was carried out on the training area Beverloo in Belgium, the heavy SS - Panzer-Abteilung 101 on the military training area Mailly -le-Camp in France. In August 1943, the corps still in formation, was moved to northern Italy.

In December 1943, the lineup was complete and the corps was transferred to France, where it was made available to the Army Group D. After the Allied landing in Normandy (→ Operation Overlord ) the Corps came under the Panzer Group West in the battle for Caen used, then in securing the withdrawal of the 7th Army in the Falaise Gap and retreat fighting to the German border. After a refresher in Westphalia followed in December of the use of the Corps as part of the 6th Panzer Army at the Battle of the Bulge. After another refresh in January 1945, the corps was moved to Hungary and took part in the beginning in March Balaton offensive. This was followed by defensive struggles during the Vienna operation of the Red Army and the surrender to American troops in Upper Austria.
