I Will Wait for You is a song by Michel Legrand (music) and Jacques Demy ( text ), which was published in 1964.

Legrand / Demy wrote the song for the musical film The Umbrellas of Cherbourg ( original title: Les Parapluies de Cherbourg, 1964 Director: Jacques Demy ), with Catherine Deneuve and Nino Castelnuovo in the lead roles. The vocal doubles of the two actors were Danielle Licari ( for Deneuve ) and José Bartel. The song dates back to the English text by Norman Gimbel, 1966 received an Oscar nomination for Best Song.

The first two lines of the song were: If it takes forever, I will wait for you / For a thousand summers, I will wait for you.

I Will Wait for You appeared on the soundtrack LP The Umbrellas of Cherbourg at Disques Vogue. Cover versions of the song released from the mid- 1960s, inter alia, Nancy and Frank Sinatra, Steve Lawrence (whose version came in 1965 at # 113 in the U.S. ), Andy Williams, Henry Mancini and Jane Morgan.
