IAAF World Athlete of the Year

The world track and field athletes of the year will be announced by the World Association of Athletics Federations IAAF. The award is endowed with prize money of $ 100,000.

History

The title was first awarded in 1988. The sprinter Usain Bolt was awarded five times, the middle and long distance runner Hicham El Guerrouj and the pole-vaulter Yelena Isinbayeva three times. Athlete of 2000 was initially Marion Jones ( U.S.), because of doping the title but was denied.

In addition, the IAAF honors in other categories such as " performance of the year ", " life's work " or " Newcomer of the Year ". 2010 and 2011 the German javelin thrower Till Wöschler and Christin Hussong were honored as Newcomer of the Year.
