IAM (Band)

IAM are a hip hop group from Marseille, France. They were together with MC Solaar, the first commercially successful French rapper, but remained more rooted in the scene. The band's name stands for the English expression I am as well for Imperial Asiatic Men ( Imperial Asian men ), Indépendantistes Autonomous Marseillais ( Independent independent Marseilles ) or invasion arrivant de Mars ( invasion from Mars, Mars is in their lyrics often a metaphor for Marseille).

The history of the band begins in 1984 as Eric Mazel ( Kheops ) and Philippe Fragione ( Akhenaton ) as Lively Crew breakdance together. By 1988, new members were added from her other friends and acquaintances, to IAM passed in its current formation: Akhenaton (Producer, MC), Imhotep (Producer, DJ), Kheops (Producer, DJ), Shurik'N (MC ), Malek Sultan aka Freeman (MC) and Kephren (Tour Manager).

My first tape was published in 1989, their first record, equal to a Major, De La Planète Mars, sold in over 100 000 copies. The group members who are Algerian, Italian and black African descent, played a style that was heavily influenced by music from the Middle East and Egypt. With their 1997 album L' École You Micro D'Argent finally they put not only musically valid until today standard for French Hip Hop, but also sold over a million copies.

  • Imhotep (also Kif Kif, Tonton ), née: Pascal Perez ( born in 1960 in Algiers ) is the musical architect of the group and creates the majority of the beats.
  • Shurik'N (also Shurik'N Chang Ti, Jo l' India, le serval), civil Geoffroy Mussard, Malagasy origin, was born in 1966 in Marseille. In addition to Akhenaton, he is the second most important songwriter and rapper of the group. As an avid Martial driver he is the influences of the Far East very fond of. Its name in Japanese means Shurik'N throwing star. Shurik'N is also active as a solo artist under the same name,.
  • Akhenaton ( also chill, Angel Eyes ), civil Philippe Fragione, was born in Marseille in 1968. He is the lead head of the group, who sings most of the lyrics. Since 1995, he has been extremely successful in several solo projects and support regional youth such as Fonky Family. In the film Comme Un Aimant he has been active as an actor, co-written with Bruno Coulais music, trying at the same time as a screenwriter. Akhenaton konventierte to Islam several years ago.
  • Freeman (also Tuco, Malek Sultan ), née: Abdelmalek Brahimi, with roots in Algeria was born in 1972 in Marseille. In the early years of IAM worked as a dancer, he began no later than the fourth album Revoir Un Printemps itself to rap lyrics.   • Kheops (also Blondin ), née: Eric Mazel, of Spanish origin, was born in 1966 in Marseille. He is the DJ of the group.
  • Kephren, civil François Mendy, Senegalese origin, was born in Paris in 1968. In the early years of the group, he was the dancer, later he took over the management of the label Côté Obscur, where IAM recorded several CDs, and is now active as a tour manager for IAM.
