Ian Bousfield

Ian Leslie Bousfield ( born February 16, 1964 in York, England) was solo trombonist with the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra and former principal trombonist of the London Symphony Orchestra and the Hallé Orchestra.

Life

At the age of seven he began playing trombone, taught by his father. Like many other well-known English Brass, he also began his career in the brass band scene. At the age of 13 he was already first trombonist in the National Youth Brass Band. He also spent four years as Principal with the Yorkshire Imperial band in the period in which they won both the local, British, as well as national auditions.

In 1979, Bousfield became the youngest winner of the Shell / London Symphony Orchestra Music Scholarship. In 1980 he became a member of the European Union Youth Orchestra, where he starred under the baton of Claudio Abbado two years. After only six months studying at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama in 1983, he first trombonist in the Hallé Orchestra.

In 1984, he led on Elgar Howarth's Trombone Concerto, along with the Yorkshire Imperial band for a radio broadcast by BBC Radio 3 in 1985, he played the British premiere of Gunther Schuller's Trombone Concerto A small trumpet music along with the Hallé Orchestra conducted by the composer himself

In 1988, Bousfield was at the age of 24 years, principal trombonist of the London Symphony Orchestra (LSO ), where he replaced Denis Wick. Denis Wick said at the time of Ian Bousfield: "he is in extremely accomplished player and what he is short on by way of experience, if he is, he is bright enough to get together very quickly. " Analogously, translated: He is an incredibly accomplished player and what he still lacks in experience, because if something is missing him, he will make up quickly by his intelligence. Bousfield 1992 trombone teacher at the Royal Academy of Music, where he is also an honorary member ever since.

In September 2000, he took a new job as principal trombone of the Vienna State Opera / Vienna Philharmonic. His colleague is coordinated Dietmar Küblböck.

In March 2007, the premiere of the trombone concerto " Stargazer" was held, which the British composer Jonathan Dove has written for Bousfield. Bousfield premiered accompanied by the LSO under the direction of Michael Tilson Thomas. In September 2007, he scored with Branimir Slokar, Michel Becquet and other trombonists to the judges of the ARD Music Competition in Munich.

In September 2012, he left the Vienna Philharmonic, to focus in addition to his professorship of trombone at the University of the Arts in Bern, in the future on his career as a soloist and conductor.
