Ian Stewart (mathematician)

Ian Stewart (* September 24, 1945 ) is a British mathematician and taught as a professor at the University of Warwick.

Biography

Stewart studied at Cambridge ( bachelor's degree in mathematics) and at the University of Warwick, where he received his doctorate in 1969 with Brian Hartley ( Subideals of Liealgebras, published in Mathematische Zeitschrift Bd.111, 1969, p.301 ). He is a professor and director of the "Mathematics Awareness Centre at Warwick " (MAC @ W ) at the University of Warwick and held a visiting professorships in Germany (1974 ), New Zealand (1976 ) and the USA ( University of Connecticut 1977-78, University of Houston 1983-84 ). He is also a professor at the University of Houston.

Stewart wrote scholarly textbooks and monographs such as " Singularities and Groups in Bifurcation Theory" ( with Martin Golubitsky and David Schaeffer ) and " Catastrophe Theory and Its Applications " (with Tim Poston ) on catastrophe theory ( and their mathematical environment such as singularity theory and bifurcation theory ). He is mainly concerned with Lie algebras, the theory of dynamical systems, in particular from the point of symmetry. Be particularly interested in the connections to applications in chaos theory (including control of chaos, anti- chaos) and biology (animal locomotion mechanisms, pattern formation in biology ).

But he is best known for his popular writings on mathematics, including journal articles, among others, for New Scientist and Scientific American and Discover. From 1990 to 2001 he wrote the " Mathematical Recreations " column " in Scientific American (in total up to now 96 columns plus another 57 for the European and Japanese editions ). It occurs in the UK and the USA on a lot on the radio and television.

He has also published books as His journal articles. "The Symmetry Perspective" ( with Martin Golubitsky ) won the 2001 " Ferran Sunyer Balaguer I Prize of the Institut d' Estudis Catalans " in Spain. He worked on the new edition of the well-known introduction to the mathematics of Richard Courant and Robbins. He also serves as science fiction author. So far, 19 science fiction short stories have been published by him in Omni, Analog and Interzone. " Wheeler ", a science fiction novel written by Jack Cohen, was published by Warner Aspect in the U.S. and by Earthlight in the UK.

With the fantasy author Terry Pratchett and Jack Cohen, he also wrote "The Science of Discworld " ( German: " The Science of Discworld "), which is 13 weeks in a row in the top 10 of the English " Sunday Times non-fiction bestseller list " and held for a Hugo Award " was nominated by the World Science Fiction Convention " in Chicago. With the continuation of "The Science of Discworld II: The Globe " the three of them achieved a similar success. In German this book initially appeared under the title " The Science of Discworld II", later named " The philosophers of the round world." Meanwhile, the English edition of the third part, " The Science of Discworld III: Darwin's Watch" is ( " Darwin and the gods of the Discworld " ) published. Stewart's book " flutter country " made it among the top 20 of the "Independent Bestseller List" in the United States.

Stewart held the famous 1997 Christmas Lectures at the Royal Institution, and in 1995 he received the Faraday Medal of the Royal Society for his contributions to the popularization of science. He holds honorary doctorates from Westminster, lions, the Open University and Kingston. He was elected " Fellow of the Royal Society " in 2001.

His doctoral counts Jeremy Gray.
