Ian Woosnam

Ian Woosnam OBE ( born March 2, 1958 in Oswestry, Shropshire, England) is a Welsh professional golfer and former World ranked first. His nickname is " Woosie ".

With the sport began in the unique Llanymynech Golf Club, which lies partly in England and partly in Wales. Woosnam is one of the "Big Five", a group of world-class golfers who were all born within 12 months, won at least one Major and Europe have made competitive in the Ryder Cup. The others are Seve Ballesteros, Nick Faldo, Bernhard Langer and Sandy Lyle.

Career

Despite its small size of 1.64 m Woosnam is a powerful golfer. As an amateur, he played with Sandy Lyle in regional competitions in the English county of Shropshire. In 1976, he was professional and launched in 1979 with the European Tour. After three rather mixed years came in 1982 with the breakthrough winning the Swiss Open. In the following years, Woosnam binned to 1997 a total of 13 times in the top 10 on the money list, which he won in 1987 and 1990. In 1990 he became the first golfer to surpass the magic £ 1 million limit in a season worldwide.

After a third place finish at the Open Championship in 1986, Woosnam reached in 1991, his greatest successes, the first place in the world ranking for a total of 50 weeks, and his first (and only) major victory at the Masters Tournament in Augusta, Georgia.

In the late 90s of the 20th century waned its shape, but at the 2001 Open Championship Woosnam nearly a spectacular comeback succeeded. A mistake of his Caddies but ( a thug too much in the golf bag ) brought him in the final round two penalty strokes one, in the end he was "only" a third party and fired the offender. In the same year Woosie won at Wentworth World Match Play Championship and became the first player to win this prestigious trophy in three decades.

Woosnam was eight times in a row, a member of the European Ryder Cup teams ( 1983 to 1997 ), and although he has not won a singles match, is his record with 14 wins in 12 losses and 5 draws more than respectable. In 2002 he was vice-captain and 2006, he has led the team as Captain of the Ryder Cup for the highest win on European soil.

Overall Woosnam has won 28 tournaments on the PGA European Tour and many more worldwide. He now lives in Jersey.
