Iberdrola
Background
The company serves 16 million customers, of which more than nine million in Spain. In addition to generating electrical energy from water and wind, the company also distributes natural gas and contributes to the operation of five nuclear power plants in Spain.
History
The company was founded in 1992 from the merger of Hidroeléctrica Española ( Hidrola ) and Hidroeléctrica Ibérica, which had been founded in 1901 and 1907, respectively.
The company acquired the UK energy utility ScottishPower on 30 March 2007 for 11.7 billion pounds. In September 2008, Iberdrola has taken over the U.S. utilities Energy East. In July 2011, a merger with Iberdrola Renovables has taken place.
