Iberia Parish, Louisiana
The Iberia Parish (French: Paroisse de l' Ibérie ) is a parish located in the state of Louisiana in the United States. In the census in 2010, the Parish had 73,240 inhabitants and a population density of 49.2 inhabitants per square kilometer. The administrative headquarters ( Parish Seat) is New Iberia.
Geography
The Parish is located in southern Louisiana, bordering the Gulf of Mexico and has an area of 2670 square kilometers, of which 1180 square miles are water. It is bordered by the following Parishes:
History
Iberia Parish was formed on October 30, 1868 from parts of St. Martin Parish and St. Mary Parish. It was named after the country of origin of the then most settlers of the Iberian Peninsula.

According to the census in 2000 lived in Iberia Parish 73,266 people in 25,381 households and 19,162 families. The population density was 49 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was made up of 65.08 percent White, 30.81 percent Black or African American, 0.31 percent Native American, 1.93 percent Asian, 0.02 percent of residents from the Pacific Islander and 0.60 percent from other races groups; 1.25 percent were descended from two or more races. 1.50 percent of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race, were members of the various groups mentioned.
Of the 25 381 households out of which 39.5 percent have children under the age of 18 living with them. 53.2 percent were married couples living together, 17.2 percent were single mothers, 24.5 percent were non-families, 21.1 percent of all households and 8.7 percent had someone living alone at the age of 65 years or older. The average household size was 2.82 and the average family size was 3.28 persons.
In relation to the parish the population was spread out 30.0 percent of residents under the age of 18, 9.6 percent between 18 and 24 years, 28.4 percent between 25 and 44 years, 20.6 percent between 45 and 64 years and 11.4 percent were 65 years old or older. The average age was 33 years. For every 100 females there were 92.8 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 89.8 males.
The median income for a household was $ 31,204, and the median income for a family was $ 36,017. Males have a median income of $ 32,399, women $ 18,174. The per capita income was $ 14,145. 20.2 percent of families 23.6 percent of the population lived below the poverty line. Of these, 31.5 percent were children or adolescents under age 18 and 20.2 percent of those 65 years.
