Iberia Parish, Louisiana

The Iberia Parish (French: Paroisse de l' Ibérie ) is a parish located in the state of Louisiana in the United States. In the census in 2010, the Parish had 73,240 inhabitants and a population density of 49.2 inhabitants per square kilometer. The administrative headquarters ( Parish Seat) is New Iberia.

Geography

The Parish is located in southern Louisiana, bordering the Gulf of Mexico and has an area of 2670 square kilometers, of which 1180 square miles are water. It is bordered by the following Parishes:

History

Iberia Parish was formed on October 30, 1868 from parts of St. Martin Parish and St. Mary Parish. It was named after the country of origin of the then most settlers of the Iberian Peninsula.

According to the census in 2000 lived in Iberia Parish 73,266 people in 25,381 households and 19,162 families. The population density was 49 people per square kilometer.
