Ibirapuera Auditorium

The Ibirapuera Auditorium ( Portuguese: Auditorio Ibirapuera ) is a concert hall designed by Oscar Niemeyer in the Parque do Ibirapuera in Sao Paulo. With the construction completed in 2005, a group of buildings in the Ibirapuera Park is completed, which had been designed in the 1950s by the architect.

Architectural concept

The building has a spatial simplicity; it consists of a single block, which has the shape of a trapezoid and in a longitudinal section of a triangle in the plan view. Like the other buildings in the park and a large part of the works Niemeyer is constructed of concrete weißgestrichenem the auditorium. The project was started in 2002 and completed in 2005. The built-up area covers 7,000 m2. 800 people can be seated in the visitors' room.

The unique shape and layout distinguish it from other concert halls since the design of the Opéra Garnier in the 19th century. It is divided into three parts, the sequences from the exterior to the interior through the foyer, the space for the audience and the stage.

The group, which forms the auditorium together with the Oca, consists of two buildings of pure and white geometric bodies and is considered the most important feature in the project from the architectural point of view. A place, a tent and a pedestrian bridge should complete the group, but were not realized.

A canopy that was running in red painted metal, covers the main entrance and gives the building its identity, which characterizes it and distinguishes it from the other buildings. For this reason, make shape and color of the element, the brand of the auditorium and act as architectural logo. Officially it is called Labareda, after the Portuguese word for flame.

Inside the building

On the first floor the entrance hall leads to the stage and the auditorium. In the basement of a bar, rooms for the administration, the school of music and cloakrooms. The building has a 20 meter wide rear gate, which makes it visible in geöffneteten state the action on stage for visitors to the park.
