History

The airport in Ibiza was founded at the beginning of the Spanish Civil War, and by this time under the military designation Aeródromo It Codolar. It Codola is the country name on which the Aeródromo was built.

After the war it was used by rescue planes of the Spanish SAR Squadron and the Coast Guard Codolar.

On 13 August 1949, the airport for civil aviation was first released and the name in Aeroport d' Eivissa changed. Due to unclear ownership, however, the facilities and flight operations for several years had to be closed again.

In 1954 the expropriation process was completed and work began on further expansion. On April 1, 1958 launched the first scheduled flights of the Spanish airline Aviaco, Ibiza - Palma and Ibiza Barcelona. In July Iberia opened regular services to Valencia and Barcelona.

In the summer of 1960, the construction of a new terminal building and control tower followed. 1961 adjacent land was expropriated and expanded the airport.

In 1962, the first extension of the airstrip was begun, which was completed in the second step with the start and runway lighting 1964.

On 15 July 1966, the international air traffic was opened and the name Aeroport d' Eivissa Sant Josep introduced.
