IBM 3270 PC

The IBM 3270 PC (type 5271 ), introduced in October 1983, was basically an IBM PC XT, which, however, at the time of publication nor necessary additional hardware to emulate a terminal type 3270 included. So was the 3270 PC can be used both as an ordinary personal computer, as well as a terminal in the host terminal system.

Technology

The additional hardware occupied almost the entire space in the computer, which was provided for extensions. It included a multi-part, programmable graphics card expansion from TTL chips. To meet the higher requirements of a 3270 graphics, a CGA - compatible graphics card with a slightly higher resolution has been installed. Another expansion card caught the signals from the supplied PC/3270-Tastatur, processed 3270 key codes, and led the PC key codes to the normal keyboard connector on. For the connection to the host computer - usually an IBM mainframe - made ​​another card, which provided a 3270 - compatible serial interface with BNC connectors.
