He was the son of the mathematician Sinan ibn Thabit ibn Qurra and grandson of Thabit. Ibrahim ibn Sinan applies even though he was only 38 years old, among the most important mathematicians of the heyday of Islamic science.

He has published, among other things, the construction of conics in connection to Apollonius of Perga, on the quadrature of the parabola, where he as Archimedes used a more general method of integration ( via the measurement of the parabola). It ties in this respect to the work of his grandfather and mentions explicitly that he so wanted to meet in the meantime reached by al- Mahani progress. He also published a treatise on mathematical methods ( using the method of analysis and synthesis ), astronomy (over the movements of the sun) and the astrolabe with discussion of map projection.
