Ibrahim Jeilan

Ibrahim Jeilan ( Amharic ዕብራህም ጅእላን ጋሹ; born June 12, 1989 in Bale) is an Ethiopian long-distance runner. His biggest success was winning the World Championship title in the 10,000 -meter run in 2011.

Career

Jeilan first attracted international attention in 2006 when he won the gold medal in the 10,000 meter race at the IAAF World Junior Championships in Beijing. In the same year, he scored at the Memorial Van Damme in Brussels over this distance a personal best of 27:02,81 min. As the only runner in the junior class of Kenyans Samuel Kamau Wanjiru was ever run faster before.

At the World Cross Country Championships 2008 in Edinburgh Jeilan won the title in the junior race, after he had given up the race early in Mombasa last year. At the Track Championships Africa in Addis Ababa, he took the 10,000 meters in second place behind compatriot Gebregziabher Gebremariam. About the same distance he was only third in the IAAF World Junior Championships in Bydgoszcz, it was unable to successfully defend his title. In road races he scored this season and victories in the Giro di Castelbuono and at the São Silvestre de Luanda.

After 2009 and 2010 hardly produces outstanding results, Jeilan joined the World Athletics Championships 2011 in Daegu again in the spotlight. In the 10,000 - meter race, he secured a surprise gold medal in front of the British Mohammed Farah and his compatriot Imane Merga. Two weeks later, he won over the same distance also with the Pan-African Games in Maputo.

Jeilan starts for the company team of the Japanese automobile manufacturer Honda.
