Ibrahim Sekagya

Ibrahim Sekagya [ sekaʤa ] ( born December 19, 1980 in Kampala ) is a Ugandan footballer and former captain of the national team. He usually plays on the position of central defender.

Career

Ibrahim Sekagya started his professional career in his hometown at the Kampala City Council FC. In 2001 he moved into the second Argentine League for Atlético de Rafaela. After another change of Ferro Carril Oeste to 2005, he was obliged by the Argentine first division club Arsenal de Sarandi. In June 2007, he was finally transferred for 1 million euros of Arsenal de Sarandi to Europe to Red Bull Salzburg. He is the most expensive player in Uganda.

Sekagyas change to Salzburg saw the beginning of unrest within the club. After assistant coach Lothar Matthäus had publicly expressed doubts about the commitment of the Ugandan national player, the club's management took the opportunity to take leave the Germans. Other differences between the club and Matthew were, however, preceded this.

Sekagya developed within a short time to a regular player and performer of the Salzburg team. The two fight and aerially strong central defender quickly gained the status of an audience favorite.

In his second season in Salzburg (2008/ 09) Sekagya took the Austrian league title his first major title, this repeated itself despite a serious injury to his meniscus in the following season.

Sekagya was captain of the Ugandan national football team and ended early 2012 his team career.

In July 2013 he signed a contract with the New York Red Bulls.
