For the first time after the war, also world champion Canada was there again, which won its twelfth title and won his fourth Olympic gold medal. Czechoslovakia finished the tournament only because of the goal difference just to second place and was the eighth time European champions.

The tournament was overshadowed by a scandal. The team of the United States stepped in with the professional players and therefore was subsequently disqualified from the International Olympic Committee.
