Ice hockey at the 1956 Winter Olympics
The Olympic ice hockey tournament of the 1956 Winter Olympics in Cortina d' Ampezzo, Italy, is also considered 23 World Ice Hockey Championships and 34 European Championships. It was held until February 4th January 26. All matches were played at the Olympic Ice Stadium Cortina. Ten teams participated in this tournament. The delegation of the GDR called for seven to eight East German athletes, while the DEV wanted to accept only two to three East German candidates in the 17 -strong team. At a meeting of the Steering Committee of the International Ice Hockey Federation beginning January 1956 were drawn matches in the preliminary round of the Olympic ice hockey tournament in Cortina d' Ampezzo. Canada was represented at the tournament by the Kitchener- Waterloo Dutchmen.
