First, only the top six teams in this tournament qualified for the A-WC, 1969; the seventh and the eight- place finisher had to dismount in the B group, however. The further composition of the B and C group at the 1969 World Cup, however, was already determined in the previous year's World Cup. The results in this tournament, did not play a role here.

The highlight of the hockey tournament was the match between the USSR and Czechoslovakia, where the Soviet serial winner with 4:5 had to be the first time in years, another team beaten. This defeat, the first since the World Cup in 1963, but now the third Olympic victory and the eighth world title and eleven European title of " Sbornaja " could not prevent.

Since the GDR was allowed to begin for the first time with its own team in the Olympics, accounted for the intra- German qualification before this hockey tournament.

Final placement of the EM

Hockey European Championship 1968 USSR 1955 USSR

In contrast to the official version Czechoslovakia is run as European champions in some recent statistics. This information is based on the original first introduced in 1969 Regulations, which among themselves their own EM- table was created based on the comparisons of the European teams. Since 1999, these criteria are also applied retroactively to the discharged since 1961 "pure" world championships. However, a subsequent application to the Olympic hockey tournaments is very limited, which is due to the specific host mode - through their non-participation in the final round is not possible inclusion of gambling in the placement round teams. In most of the recognized statistics, in the traditional method, the placement at the Olympic tournament for the EM- placement is crucial, therefore, the USSR is considered to be European champions. The sake of completeness, however, an EM- point table is listed here.

With the establishment of a master and a relegation round was back in 1976 and at the World Championships to the " placement score " for the determination of European Champion.
