Ice hockey at the 1976 Winter Olympics

The Winter Olympic Games 1976 were originally supposed to be held in Denver, Colorado in the USA. However, due to strong resistance in the population against the expected high cost of the Olympic Winter Games the Games from the city of Denver to the IOC were returned. As a replacement Innsbruck now jumped into Austria, which was already twelve years previously been hosted the Winter Olympic Games. Consequently, also the Olympic Hockey Tournament was held in Innsbruck. The hockey games were held in the period from February 2 to 14. Twelve teams participated in this tournament.

Were eligible to participate, the six teams in the A- group of the Ice Hockey World Championship in 1975 as well as the top four teams in the B group and the winner of the C group. Added to this was Austria as host. However waived with Sweden ( A-Group third parties), the GDR ( B group winner) and Norway (C- group winner) three eligible teams for their participation. For these teams engaged Romania ( B groups - fifth), Japan (B- groups - sixth) and Bulgaria to (C- group second).

The tournament started as the Olympic tournaments before with an elimination round. The pairings were thereby compiled from a set list, which was based on the rankings of the World Cup 1975.

Sovereign tournament winner was the USSR, which won her fifth gold medal, in Czechoslovakia. Sensational winner of the bronze medal was West Germany, which compared to the teams from Finland and the United States was successful with one another due to the better Torquotienten in direct comparisons.

The tournament was overshadowed by a doping case. The Czechoslovak player Frantisek Pospisil was transferred after the match against Poland taking whatever is on the index means codeine. The game was considered for the Czechoslovak team 0-2 points and 0-1 gates. But still was the actual final score of 1:7 for opponents Poland.
