Ice hockey at the 1996 Asian Winter Games

The hockey competitions of the III. Asian Winter Games was held from February 5 to 8 in 1996 in Harbin, People's Republic of China instead. Besides the host nation China took a further three countries - Japan, South Korea and Kazakhstan - the competition. Kazakhstan took after its independence for the first time in the competition. It secured the gold medal and remained the same tournament without defeat. Behind Japan and China won the other medals.

In addition, for the first time a hockey tournament for women was held. The participants were the host nation, Japan and Kazakhstan. Unlike the men, the People's Republic of China won the gold medal without a defeat. Again, silver went to Japan, Kazakhstan won bronze.

Each of the four teams played once against every other team. The team with the most points won the gold medal.

The tournament was the same as qualifying for the 1998 Winter Olympics in Nagano, Japan. Since Japan was already automatically set to host the Games for the Olympic ice hockey tournament, the three encounter served without Japanese participation as group D of the second qualifying round. Only the winner reached the third round.
