History

The first European Ice Hockey Championships were founded two years earlier in 1910 by the World Association LIHG (now IIHF ) held in Switzerland. It was the first official international tournament for national teams at all. As a result, the tournament has been held annually. However, the tournament was subsequently canceled in 1912 because bronze winner Austria was officially begin until six weeks after the European Championships in the LIHG. From 1915 to 1920 no European Championship was held due to the First World War.

For the first time in 1928 the European Championship was not held as a separate tournament, but the European title in the best European country in the World Ice Hockey Championships awarded ( the World Cup 1928 in turn was played at the Olympic Games ). After that, only two independent EM tournaments were played (1929 and 1932 ), otherwise counted the ranking of European countries at the World Cup as EM- rating.

From 1966 to 1975, each own EM- table was created from the World Cup results of the European teams. This scheme owes the GDR winning their only European Championship medal in 1966, but this was finally resolved by the IIHF in 1999. From 1983 to 1991 also has its own EM- table was created, in which were incorporated but only the results of the European teams in the preliminary round. After a mode reform of the World Cup, the European Championship was discontinued after 65 tournaments in 1991.

The discharged since 1996 Euro Hockey Tour is sometimes referred to as the unofficial Hockey Championship. However, in taking this tour only Russia, Sweden, Czech Republic and Finland, there is a lack, for example, the 2002 World Cup, Slovakia. In the recent past has been discussed several times on the reintroduction of an official Ice Hockey Championship, which the Euro Hockey Tour tournaments and testing should replace the Germany Cup as. These considerations led to the introduction of the Euro Hockey Challenge, which will be played as the twelve strongest European nations competition since 2011.
