Iceland Stock Exchange

The Iceland Stock Exchange ICEX (English: Iceland Stock Exchange; Icelandic: Kauphöll Íslands ) was established in 1985 as a joint venture of several banks and brokers on the initiative of the Icelandic Central Bank. First, only Icelandic government bonds were traded on ICEX. The shares began trading in 1990 and developed rapidly. At present, companies write mainly to Iceland stock exchange in the fields of banking, trade, fisheries, transportation and insurance.

On 30 November 2006, the merger of the ICEX was completed with the Scandinavian Community OMX. The Eignarhaldsfelagid Verdbrefathing who was last owner of the ICEX, received 2.06756 million new shares of OMX for fusion.

Since the Icelandic economy is very small, the listed companies on the ICEX are relatively small, the trading volume was correspondingly low. The ICEX was also the smallest market in Western Europe.
