The parliamentary elections in Iceland in 2009 took place on April 25, 2009. In choosing the 63 members of the Althing were redefined.

Prehistory

The early parliamentary election was scheduled after protesters had demanded for months in winter 2008/2009, most recently in day-long blockades of the state institutions that the government resign Haarde. This was alleged to be responsible for the catastrophic effects of the since 2007, ever deepening international financial crisis on the Icelandic economy. Iceland managed to avert national bankruptcy only with foreign aid. Inflation and unemployment soared.

Prime Minister Geir Haarde resigned, the former Minister of Social Affairs Jóhanna Sigurðardóttir was up for election at the head of a minority government of the Alliance and Left Green Movement, which was tolerated by the Progress Party. Finance was Steingrímur J. Sigfússon.

Polls just before the election predicted a clear victory of the Red-Green minority government under Jóhanna Sigurðardóttir for April 25 held parliamentary elections.

Election result

The Socialist Alliance dissolved with 29.8 % of the vote, the Independence Party as strongest party from. Together with the Left-Green Movement, which came to 21.7 % of the vote, the Left Alliance reached 51.5 % of the vote. Thus, the absolute majority was for the first time since 1944 when the left-wing parties. The dominant since 1944 Conservatives fell from 36.1% to 23.7%. The Independence Party and the Liberal Party suffered heavy losses. The Liberal party is not represented in Parliament. Right away the catchment managed in the Althing, which emerged from the financial crisis civil rights movement.
