Icelandic Phallological Museum

The Icelandic Phallus Museum (own name in traditional Icelandic spelling HID Íslenzka Reðasafn ) in Reykjavík is a museum that deals with the Phallologie. The museum collects preserved penises of any kind mammal in Iceland. It exhibits of species that do not live in Iceland, and thematically related art are also on display. The museum has over 200 exhibits. Since the spring of 2011, is among the exhibits for the first time a human penis.

History

Sigurdur Hjartarson founded the museum in 1997 and ran it as a director until the year 2012. From then on, his son Hjörtur Gisli Sigurdsson the line.

After Hjartarson could muster no funds for rent in Reykjavík from the teaching profession in 2004 after his retirement, he moved the collection to his new residence in Húsavík. There, the museum was temporarily from 2004 to 2012. According to the takeover by Hjartarsons son, the museum was moved back to Reykjavík, where it has since located in the main shopping street, Laugavegur.

The documentary "The Final Member" of the year 2012 covers the history of the museum and its founder and the search for a donor of the human penis exhibit.
