Icelandic presidential election, 1996

The presidential election in Iceland in 1996 was held on 29 June 1996. In it, the fifth President of the Republic of Iceland was determined.

Prehistory

After the first democratically elected female head of state in the world, Vigdís Finnbogadóttir, had decided after four terms in office against a bid again, Prime Minister Oddsson Davíð announced on 18 March 1996 at a presidential election on 29 June 1996. The following persons thereupon declared their candidacy:

  • Ástþór Magnússon ( born 1953, entrepreneur )
  • Guðrún Agnarsdóttir ( * 1941, doctor)
  • Guðrún Pétursdóttir ( born 1950, drew her candidacy on June 19 back )
  • Ólafur Ragnar Grimsson ( born 1943, member of the Althing )
  • Pétur Kr Hafstein ( * 1949, Judge of the Constitutional Court )

Election result

194 705 voters were registered for the election, which corresponded to a share of 72.4 % of the Icelandic population. 167 334 of them, ie 85.9 %, participated in the election. 165 233 valid votes were cast:

Ólafur Ragnar Grimsson won the election and became effective as of August 1, 1996 President of Iceland.
