The presidential election in Iceland in 2012 was held on 30 June 2012. The Icelandic state is elected for a period of four years. Six candidates competed for election.

Candidates

The incumbent Ólafur Ragnar Grimsson, who since 1996 has been in office and is in its fourth presidency, hinted in his New Year speech in 2012 that he greater freedom for himself and his activities wished, without the burden of a presidency. At the same time, he avoided a concrete statement, if he wanted to compete again or not. As a result, there has been speculation about a possible resignation Ólafurs. After 30,000 Icelanders had signed a petition in support Ólafurs, this was early March 2012 his renewed candidacy.

Good poll numbers reached during the summer Þóra Arnórsdóttir. She works as a news editor for the Icelandic Broadcasting Corporation ( Ríkisútvarpið ), lives with Svavar Halldórsson and is the mother of three children.

The other candidates were Trausti Ari Guðmundsson, the law professor Herdís Þorgeirsdóttir, Andrea Jóhanna Ólafsdóttir, chairman of Hagsmunasamtök heimilanna ( coalition of homeowners ), and the geographer Hannes Bjarnason.

His candidacy had also announced Ástþór Magnússon. It would have been his third nomination after 1996 and 2004. As in 2000, he was also 2012 not registered to vote.
