Ichthyocentaurs

Ichthyokentauren (Greek Ἰχθυοκένταυροι, Ikhthyokentauroi, Fischkentauren ) are in Greek mythology, sea creatures, which are equipped with since Scopas in the fine art of the Greeks and Romans representations of the sea and its inhabitants.

As iconographic features of the Ichthyokentauren the human torso, the front of a four-footed animal, usually a horse, and the abdomen of the fish are. The difference consists in the animal the Tritons front part, which does not have the Tritons. In the rare descriptions in ancient literature they be assimilated to the Tritons, which makes a distinction already questionable in antiquity.

In Claudian Venus riding on a Triton -called Ichthyokentauren over the sea, to representations Nereid and occasionally Silene, Aphrodite and Eros are often shown riding on them, sometimes they are led by Triton. As attributes them rowing, tridents, bars, drinking vessels, lyres, snail horns or flutes are added.
