Features

Butterfly

The wingspan of the butterfly is 12 to 14 mm in females and 14 to 18 mm in males. The ground color of the wings is mostly bright orange tints. Geographical distribution and occurrence

Idaea flaveolaria is to be found in particular in the Southern Alps. Local resources in the Apennines and in Spain are subject to confirmation. The species also occurs in the Ukraine, Russia, Turkey, Transcaucasia and Iran. In the Central Alps, it rises up to 1800 meters. It prefers warm, dry slopes and skimmed lawns.

Way of life

The moths form a brood from June to August. You like to fly in the day, especially the males. The females are flightless sluggish. This is also due to the smaller wingspan. As a food plant of the caterpillars are polyphagous various low-growing plants. The caterpillars overwinter.
