Ideal (ethics)

Ideal (from gr idéa, shape, archetype ) is a term of philosophical aesthetics, ethics, and philosophy of science. Ideal is a perfection of pattern.

For Immanuel Kant and Friedrich Schiller an ideal is an individual idea. Both use the term in aesthetics ( Kant's Critique of Judgment ) and the practical ethical reason.

Operationally, the philosopher Paul Lorenzen determines the adjective "ideal" as a standard to aim for, which one can not entirely satisfy ( but only approximate ). For this purpose, the noun "ideal" is used as a criterion for convergence.
