Idiopathic

The term idiopathy ( from Ancient Greek ἴδιος idios, intrinsically ' and πάθος páthos, suffering ') is used in conjunction with diseases that arise without a tangible cause.

The term idiopathic is similarly used in medicine as there synonymous term essential in order to give in the naming of the disease an indication that research into the cause of the disease has so far been unsuccessful. The use of the term does not imply a rating with respect to a suspected cause or severity of the disease. In many diseases in which the cause is not clearly understood, the term is also not used.
