Government

Idlib also Idleb or Edleb (Arabic إدلب, DMG Idlib ), ( إدلب الخضراء ), with 164 983 inhabitants ( calculated 2010). the capital of the province of Idlib ( Muhafazat Idleb ) in northwestern Syria.

Cityscape

The town is located about 50 km southwest of Aleppo and 45 km east of Jisr ash- Schugur at the former main road to Latakia. A new highway bypasses now in the south of the city. The Turkish border is about 20 km away.

The population is Sunni and minority of various Christian religious groups and Druze. In addition to Arabs, there are some Kurds and Turks.

History

From Roman times, almost no remains are preserved. In medieval times, a settlement was founded by a governor of Aleppo received city rights in 1700. There was at the time a Souq, at least a hammam and a Khan. The public facilities were financed partly by pious foundations ( waqf ). 1838 there were 15 soap factories in Idlib, the processed olive oil produced regionally. Agriculture

The climate is dry Mediterranean. There is less rain than on the coast, but sufficient enough for the cultivation of winter cereals, olive trees, fruit trees and grapes. Idlib is one of the traditional olive -growing areas, where the local harvest is processed commercially. Many families manage their own olive groves in the area. There are several olive presses in the city. During the French Mandate, the Idlib region introduced as the first non-irrigated cotton production in Syria.
