Idoxuridine (2' -deoxy -5-iodo -uridine ) is a nucleoside analogue of the biochemical uridine. It consists of 5 - iodouridine and deoxyribose.
It is used as an antiviral agent (eg Virunguent ®) against herpes viruses. According to Coster et al. it should have a similar efficacy to acyclovir. Idoxurin acts as an antagonist of thymidine in the DNA synthesis of virus.
