Idris I of Morocco

Idris ibn ʿ Abd (Arabic إدريس بن عبدالله, even Idris I. † 791 ) was the first ruler of the Idrisids from 789 to 791

Idris ibn Abdellah ( al-Kamil ) was a descendant of the Caliph Ali ibn Abi Talib ( 656-661 ). After involvement in a revolt against the Abbasids Aliden ( 786) he had to flee from Medina and came across Egypt to Morocco. There he spread among the still partly pagan, Auraba Berbers in northern Morocco Islam. He was recognized by the Berbers in northern Morocco and the Rif Mountains as Imam. Center of his rule was Walila (ancient Volubilis ).

As he conquered 789 Agadir in Tlemcen and the Banu Ifran defeated, Idris I. began with the expansion of its sphere of influence. He also expanded his influence by an alliance with the Magrawa Berbers under Muhammad ibn Hazar. In the following years he founded 789 at today Fès a fortified camp.

791 was Idris I, before the birth of his son Idris II ( 791-828 ), poisoned. This should be done on the orders of Caliph Harun ar - Rashid. Idris I was in Walila, today Moulay Idris, burial. Later this place became an important place of pilgrimage for Muslims in Morocco.
