Idukki Dam

The Idukki Dam ( other spellings are Idduki and Idikki ) is a dam on the River Periyar in Idukki District of the southern Indian state of Kerala. It was built in 1976 and is Moolamattom between the mountains " Kuravanmala " ( 839 m) and " Kurathimala " (925 m).

With 167.68 (or 169) meters in height, the arch dam was at times one of the largest in Asia, but is by far not the highest. The reservoir has a total of three Absperrbauwerke, namely Idukki, Cheruthoni and Kulamavu. The Idukki Dam is an arch dam as the only. The dam was built with Canadian technical cooperation of the " Hindustan Construction Company".

By pipes the water is directed into an underground power house after Moolamattom where in a hydroelectric power plant energy is produced. There are six turbines each with 180 MW capacity; according to other sources, the total capacity 780 MW. The first electricity was produced on 4 October 1975.
